Technologyfacilitated, often written technology-facilitated, is an umbrella term used to describe activities in which information and communication technologies play a central enabling role. It encompasses a broad range of domains, including crime, abuse, harassment, fraud, exploitation, misinformation, and privacy violations, where digital platforms, networks, devices, and software enable, amplify, or disguise the conduct.

In criminology and policy, technology-facilitated crime refers to offenses that rely on technology as a primary tool or channel, such as online fraud, hacking, the distribution of illicit materials, or the coordination of illicit marketplaces. Technology-facilitated abuse covers behaviors where abusers use digital tools to monitor, intimidate, control, or harass victims, for example through spyware, digital surveillance, or coercive messaging. Misinformation and manipulation campaigns also fall under this umbrella, where platforms and algorithms enable rapid spread and targeting.

Key characteristics include the speed and anonymity of online platforms, the global reach of digital networks, and the persistence of data trails. These features complicate detection, attribution, and enforcement and can complicate privacy rights for users.

Responses combine law, policy, platform governance, and public education. Law enforcement has created specialized cybercrime units, while regulators explore requirements for platform responsibility, data protection, and safe-by-design approaches. Critics caution that the broad label can obscure important differences across sectors and jurisdictions and may risk implying that technology alone causes behavior rather than social and economic factors.
