Sporrans are traditional Scottish pouch-like accessories worn with kilts. They are typically made from animal skins such as calf, sealskin, or badger, and often feature decorative elements like tassels, metal clasps, and embroidery. The sporran serves both a practical and decorative purpose. Historically, it was used to carry money, tobacco, and other small items. Today, while still functional, it is primarily worn as an essential part of Highland dress for formal occasions and ceilidhs.

The design of a sporran can vary significantly. Dress sporrans, worn for formal events like weddings and balls, are usually made of softer leathers or furs and are highly embellished. Day sporrans, intended for less formal wear, are generally simpler in design. The pouch itself is often made from leather, with the front panel being the more decorative part. Tassels, usually made of leather or fur, are a common feature, hanging from the bottom of the sporran. Metalwork, including the cantle (the clasp at the top), can be made from various materials and feature intricate designs.

The way a sporran is worn is also specific. It is attached to the kilt belt by a chain or leather strap, with the sporran hanging in front of the kilt, typically centered between the wearer's legs. The sporran's position should be roughly level with the bottom of the kilt apron. Its importance in Highland attire has cemented its place as a recognizable symbol of Scottish culture and heritage.
