Sklady are buildings or parts of buildings used for the storage of goods and materials. In Czech usage, sklad means warehouse, and sklady refers to warehouses in general or to a group of storage facilities. They form a core element of modern logistics and supply chains, enabling inventory holding, handling, and distribution.

Functions and types

Sklady serve multiple functions, including long-term storage, short-term holding, order fulfillment, packing, staging, and, in some cases, cross-docking where goods are rapidly transferred from inbound to outbound transportation. Common types include general warehouses for bulk storage, distribution centers optimized for high throughput, and specialized facilities such as cold storage for temperature-sensitive products or bonded warehouses for goods under customs supervision. Some warehouses are designed for hazardous materials or bulky items or incorporate automated handling systems.

Design and operation

Typical warehouse construction uses reinforced concrete floors and a steel or concrete frame, with sufficient clear height and floor loading capacity to accommodate pallets and heavy equipment. Key features include loading docks, loading bays, and racking systems that maximize storage density. Climate control, fire protection, security, and robust lighting are standard. Operations increasingly rely on information systems such as warehouse management systems (WMS) integrated with enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, along with barcode or RFID tracking. Automation, including automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) and conveyors, is expanding storage density and throughput.

Location and regulation

Sklady are usually located near transport corridors—roads, rail, ports—to minimize moving costs. Zoning, safety regulations, fire codes, and environmental and labor rules govern construction and operation. Sustainable design practices and energy efficiency are growing priorities in new facilities.
