Procesleiding is the practice of guiding and governing a defined set of activities within an organization to produce a specific result. It focuses on the process itself—the design, performance, and continual improvement—rather than solely on managing the people who execute it. A procesleider is responsible for ensuring that the process delivers the expected outputs efficiently, consistently, and in compliance with applicable rules and standards.

Typical tasks include defining scope and objectives, creating a process map or workflow, identifying required resources, roles and responsibilities, and determining inputs, outputs and quality criteria. The procesleider plans and coordinates activities, monitors progress with relevant metrics, manages risks and issues, and ensures timely communication with stakeholders. When needed, the process is redesigned or optimized using systematic methods such as PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act), value stream mapping, or Lean and Six Sigma techniques. Tools commonly used are process maps (BPMN diagrams), KPI dashboards, and control charts.

Procesleiding is closely related to, but distinct from, project management and general leadership. Process management is ongoing and repeatable, whereas projects have temporary scopes. In organizations, process owners or process managers often take on procesleiding responsibilities, sometimes with the support of process coordinators or governance bodies.

Examples include the order-to-cash process in finance, the patient admission process in healthcare, or the incident-management process in IT service management. Benefits of effective procesleiding include greater clarity, higher efficiency, reduced risk, and improved compliance and customer satisfaction. Common challenges are unclear ownership, resistance to change, data quality gaps, and coordinating across silos.
