Phosphorus deficiency, or phosphorus-deficient, refers to a state in which an organism receives insufficient phosphorus to support normal growth and metabolism. Phosphorus is a macronutrient essential for energy transfer (ATP), genetic material (DNA and RNA), and membrane structure. In soils, deficiency often arises from low available phosphate, which can be caused by inherently low soil phosphorus, high soil pH that immobilizes phosphate, or phosphate fixation by iron, aluminum, or calcium compounds.

In plants, phosphorus deficiency is a common agronomic problem. Symptoms include stunted growth, delayed maturity, poor root development, and reduced seed and fruit production. Foliar indicators commonly include dark green to bluish-green leaves and reddish or purplish coloration on stems and leaf margins, especially in younger tissues. Plants may also display weak tillering and poor flowering. Environmental factors such as cold, wet soils or drought can exacerbate phosphorus limitation.

Diagnosis and management in agricultural settings typically rely on soil tests that estimate available phosphorus (for example, Olsen or Bray tests) and tissue analysis to confirm deficiency. Management strategies include applying phosphorus fertilizers (such as monoammonium phosphate, diammonium phosphate, or triple superphosphate), banding fertilizer near roots, and splitting applications to match crop demand. Adjusting soil pH toward the range where phosphate is more soluble (generally around pH 6–7) and incorporating organic matter can improve phosphorus availability.

In humans and animals, phosphorus deficiency (hypophosphatemia) is uncommon but can occur with severe malnutrition, alcoholism, refeeding after starvation, certain medications, or malabsorption disorders. Symptoms include bone pain, weakness, muscle dysfunction, and, in severe cases, respiratory or cardiac effects. Diagnosis is via blood tests, and treatment involves dietary modification and phosphate supplementation under medical supervision. Excessive phosphorus, particularly from supplements, can also cause health problems, making balanced management important.
