Design and operation: Petreeners typically comprise modular components such as a base docking station and mobile modules equipped with cameras, microphones, motion and location sensors, treats dispensers, feeders, and environmental monitors. They usually connect over Wi-Fi or other home networks and run on on-device artificial intelligence with optional cloud processing for data analytics. Safety features commonly emphasized include obstacle avoidance, tamper resistance, secure data handling, and privacy controls such as local processing and data minimization.

Applications: In domestic settings, petreeners are envisioned for households with pets when owners are away, in multi-pet environments, or for elderly caregivers. They may also find roles in animal shelters or veterinary facilities for routine monitoring, enrichment, or pre-visit triage.
