Osteoarthritis, known in Hungarian as oszteoartritisz, is a degenerative joint disease that affects cartilage, the tissue that cushions the ends of bones within a joint. Over time, this cartilage can break down, leading to bone rubbing against bone. This friction causes pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility in the affected joints. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, particularly affecting older adults, though it can occur at any age due to injury or overuse.

The exact causes of osteoarthritis are not fully understood, but several factors are known to contribute. These include aging, genetic predisposition, obesity, previous joint injuries or surgery, and certain occupations or activities that place repetitive stress on joints. Common sites for osteoarthritis include the knees, hips, hands, and spine. Symptoms typically develop gradually and can vary in severity. Pain that worsens with activity and improves with rest is characteristic, as is stiffness, especially in the morning or after periods of inactivity. Swelling, a grating sensation during movement, and decreased range of motion are also common.

While there is no cure for osteoarthritis, treatments focus on managing symptoms and improving function. These may include lifestyle modifications such as weight loss and exercise, pain relief medications (over-the-counter or prescription), physical therapy to strengthen muscles around the joint, and assistive devices like canes or braces. In more severe cases, corticosteroid injections into the joint or surgical interventions like joint replacement may be considered. Early diagnosis and management can help slow the progression of the disease and maintain a good quality of life.
