Kroj is the traditional regional folk costume of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The term describes both the overall outfit and the distinct regional styles that express local identity. Each kroj is a coordinated set of garments and accessories rather than a single item, and it reflects historical dress as well as regional craftsmanship.

Typical components include a blouse or shirt, a bodice or corset, a decorative vest or waistcoat, a long skirt, and an apron. Women’s outfits are often completed with a headscarf or bonnet and jewelry, while men’s versions may feature a shirt, knitted vest, belt, and shoulder strap. Fabrics are commonly linen, wool, or cotton, with embroidery, appliqué, or woven bands providing color and motifs. Colors and motifs vary by region and can carry traditional meanings or preferences.

Regional variation is a key feature of kroje. Czech kroje show differences between Moravian and Silesian styles, including cut, decoration, and color schemes. Slovak kroje display regional identities across areas such as Orava, Liptov, Horehronie, and Zemplín, with bold embroidery and patterned banding, along with aprons and head coverings that reflect local customs. The styles typically indicate the wearer’s region, village, and the occasion.

History and use: Kroje developed from medieval dress and evolved through the 18th and 19th centuries, with a revival during the national romantic period. Today kroje are worn mainly at folk festivals, weddings, and cultural events, and are preserved in museums and by folk ensembles. They serve as symbols of heritage, craftsmanship, and regional pride.
