jaguar

The jaguar (Panthera onca) is a large feline native to the Americas and the largest cat species on the continent. It has a sturdy, compact build, a broad head, and a short tail. Its coat is tawny to orange-yellow with dark rosettes, providing camouflage in forested and rocky habitats. Jaguars inhabit a range of environments from tropical forests and wetlands to open grasslands, often near water. They are primarily solitary and territorial, marking boundaries with scent and vocalizations. Jaguars ambush their prey, feeding on a variety of mammals and reptiles, including capybaras, caimans, and deer; they can also take fish and birds. They are proficient swimmers and frequently hunt in or near water. The species is currently listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN, facing threats from habitat loss, fragmentation, and poaching. Conservation efforts focus on protected areas and habitat corridors to maintain genetic diversity and secure prey populations.
