Tata

Tata refers to the Tata Group, an Indian multinational conglomerate headquartered in Mumbai. It is one of India's oldest and largest business groups, with operations spanning sectors such as steel, automotive, information technology, chemicals, energy, consumer products, hospitality, and financial services.

The group traces its origins to 1868, when Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata founded a textile business. It later expanded into iron and steel with Tata Iron and Steel Company (now Tata Steel) in 1907 and diversified widely over the decades. Tata Sons serves as the holding company and principal governance vehicle, with leadership passing through the Tata family after early figures like J. R. D. Tata and, more recently, Ratan Tata.

Tata Sons holds the majority stake in the group through its charitable Tata Trusts, which own a controlling interest in the holding company. The Tata Group's operating companies include Tata Motors (automobiles, including Jaguar Land Rover), Tata Steel (steel), Tata Consultancy Services (IT services), Tata Power (energy), Tata Chemicals, Tata Global Beverages, Titan Company (watches and jewelry), and Taj Hotels Resorts & Palaces. In 2022, the group completed the acquisition of Air India, returning the airline to Tata ownership.

Global footprint and activities: The Tata Group operates in more than 100 countries and employs hundreds of thousands of people. It is known for a long-standing tradition of philanthropy through the Tata Trusts and supports science, education, and social initiatives, including institutions such as the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.
