Instructional materials and methods span in-person lectures, digital modules, simulations, and blended or online learning environments. Advances in technology have expanded instructional possibilities through multimedia, interactive exercises, and adaptive learning systems that tailor content to individual performance.

In practice, evaluation of instructional effectiveness uses formative assessment during development and summative assessment after delivery, measuring outcomes such as knowledge gains, skill acquisition, and transfer to real-world tasks. Critics note that instruction should account for context, motivation, and learner differences, and that not all learning is best served by formal instructional design.
