Headcollars, also known as bit collars or head halters, are headgear devices used primarily in animal training and management, most commonly for horses, bulls, cattle, and sometimes exotic animals. They consist of a strap or ring that fits around the animal's head, typically attached to a bridle or harness, allowing the handler to apply pressure to a specific part of the head. The aim is to redirect the animal’s attention or signal a desired action.

Historically, headcollars appear in medieval armour and early hoof–blooded- animal training. In equine practice, the modern headcollar evolved from the 16th‑century prowler and iron chain collars, with the “noseband” style becoming widespread in the 19th century. These collars were developed to improve control without excessive restraint, especially during riding and competitive events.

Contemporary designs vary in shape, material, and fastening. Common variants include the “M‑collar” with a collar ring and a noseband or a simple “band” styled around the zygomatic arch. Leather, nylon, and plastic are prevalent substances, chosen for durability, skin compatibility, and ease of cleaning. Dressage and show jumping collars incorporate quick‑release mechanisms for safety and compliance with sporting regulations.

Proper use requires correct sizing, positioning above the ears, and gradual acclimatization to avoid undue pressure or injury. Over‑tightening or improper placement can cause discomfort, bruising, or behavioural changes. Regulations in many jurisdictions mandate that headcollars be used responsibly and that handlers be trained in their appropriate application. When managed correctly, headcollars serve as an efficient tool for communication and training across a range of species.
