The 16th century, spanning from 1500 to 1599 CE, marked a transitional period between late medieval society and early modern globalization. It witnessed the consolidation of Renaissance ideas in art, philosophy, and secular thought, alongside the religious upheavals of the Reformation and the Catholic Counter-Reformation. Global exploration expanded European horizons, linking continents through trade, conquest, and exchange.

In Europe, centralized monarchies and new bureaucratic structures began to supplant older feudal frameworks. The Reformation, initiated by Martin Luther’s theses in 1517, fractured Western Christianity and led to the establishment of Protestant churches across large portions of Europe. The Catholic Church responded with the Council of Trent (1545–63) and the broader Counter-Reformation. The era also included significant political and military conflicts, such as wars of religion within and between states, and the continuation of dynastic rivalries. European powers, notably Spain and Portugal, extended their empires overseas, while the Holy Roman Empire remained politically divided.

In science, Copernicus published the heliocentric model in 1543, signaling a shift in astronomical thought. Developments in anatomy, medicine, and natural philosophy also advanced, often intertwined with religious and philosophical debates of the era. Artistic movements such as Mannerism reflected changing tastes in painting and sculpture.

Globally, maritime exploration and colonial ventures reshaped economies and societies. The era saw extensive contact with the Americas, Africa, and Asia, including the fall of major empires in the Americas and the beginnings of sustained European colonial rule. The Columbian Exchange linked ecosystems, diets, and commodities across continents, contributing to a growing global economy and the emergence of mercantile practices toward the century’s end.
