A headcollar, also known as a halter, is a piece of horse tack used for ground handling. It fits around the horse’s head and is designed for leading, tying, grooming, loading, and routine checks. It is not intended for riding, as it lacks a bit and reins.

A typical headcollar consists of a noseband, cheekpieces, a crownpiece that passes over the poll, and a throatlatch to help prevent slipping. It is commonly made from leather or synthetic materials such as nylon or webbing, and is adjustable with buckles or sliders. Some designs include a breakaway feature for safety, or a padded noseband to reduce pressure on sensitive areas.

Headcollars come in a range of styles and fittings. Leather halters are durable and often preferred for daily work, while nylon or webbing halters are lighter and easier to clean. Breakaway or safety headcollars are designed to release under load to prevent injury if a horse panics or becomes entangled. Some designs include additional features such as double nosebands or throatstraps for a more secure fit.

Use and fit: A headcollar is used for leading, tying, and yard routines. It should fit comfortably, with the noseband sitting around the horse’s nostrils and the throatlatch adjustable without pinching. The fit should allow a few fingers’ space to prevent pressure points. Never leave a headcollar on a tied horse that could cause entanglement or injury.

Care and safety: Regularly inspect for wear, fraying, or broken buckles. Clean and condition leather, and replace damaged equipment promptly. Do not rely on a headcollar for restraint or riding.
