A quick release is a mechanism that enables rapid, tool-free attachment or detachment of a component or accessory. The term is commonly associated with bicycle wheel hubs and skewers but is also used for cam-operated fasteners on tripods, camera plates, and certain mounting systems.

In bicycle applications, a quick-release consists of a hollow axle through the hub and a cam-action skewer with a spring and a lever. Closing the lever tensions the skewer, drawing the wheel firmly into the frame or fork. The design allows wheel removal for maintenance, transport, or repairs, in seconds. Correct use requires the lever to be fully closed and oriented toward the non-drive side; the wheel should be centered, and the skewer tightened to the specified tension. Some frames and hubs use through-axle designs that do not use a traditional quick-release.

In photography and videography, quick-release plates attach cameras to tripods. These plates, often Arca-Swiss or compatible styles, enable fast mounting, detaching, and re-mounting while providing varying load capacities. Users should ensure plate and clamp compatibility and verify a secure connection before shooting.

Other uses appear in firearm mounts, drones, and industrial equipment to enable rapid accessory changes. Across domains, safety and compatibility depend on correct sizing, material strength, and adherence to manufacturer guidelines. The bicycle quick-release concept was popularized in the early 20th century by inventors such as Tullio Campagnolo.
