Detaching is the process of separating something that is attached or the state of being detached. It encompasses physical separation as well as mental or emotional disengagement. The term is used across disciplines to describe a deliberate or natural separation from an object, component, or connection.

In engineering and mechanics, detachment often refers to the deliberate release of a component that is designed to be removable or separable. Examples include detachable housings, modular assemblies, and stage separation in rocketry. Detachment mechanisms may rely on latches, bolts, pins, or pyrotechnic or spring-loaded release systems.

In medicine and biology, detachment denotes a separation of tissues or organs from their normal attachments. Retinal detachment is a medical emergency in which the retina pulls away from the underlying tissue. Plants also detach parts through abscission, a controlled process that enables leaf fall or fruit drop.

In psychology and philosophy, detachment can describe emotional distance or non-attachment, a state of viewing situations with objectivity or reducing personal reactivity. It may be intentional, as in mindfulness or certain spiritual practices, or it may reflect avoidance or dissociation in some contexts.

In computing and data management, detach means to disconnect a resource from its current session or context. This includes detaching external devices from a computer, detaching databases in software environments, or temporarily severing links between software modules.
