Nonattachment is a term used in spiritual, philosophical, and psychological contexts to describe a mental state characterized by freedom from clinging to people, possessions, outcomes, or fixed identities. It involves engaging with life and others without being governed by craving, aversion, or an obsessive need for control. Nonattachment does not imply indifference or neglect; rather, it denotes a balanced relationship with experience, allowing for care and action without becoming dependent on results.

In Buddhist traditions, nonattachment is linked to the ideas of impermanence (anicca) and non-self (anatta) and is cultivated to reduce suffering caused by craving. Meditation and mindfulness practices train individuals to notice attachments as transient and to choose responses aligned with intention rather than impulse. Similar notions exist in Hindu thought as vairāgya (detachment) and in other spiritual systems that emphasize discernment, surrender, and ethical living.

In modern psychology, nonattachment is often discussed as adaptive emotional regulation, reducing rumination and reactivity while maintaining value-based functioning. Techniques parallel to meditation, such as cognitive defusion and value-driven action, are used to foster flexible engagement rather than avoidance.

Critics note that excessive emphasis on nonattachment can be misused to justify apathy or disengagement from social or ethical commitments. Proponents, however, argue that it supports resilience, clearer priorities, and healthier relationships by decreasing envy, possessiveness, and fear of loss.
