Hardwareswitches, commonly referred to as hardware switches, are physical devices that open or close electrical circuits or route signals. They provide a tangible, hardware‑level state that remains in effect regardless of software conditions, and they are used to directly control power or signal paths in an electronic system.

Common forms include mechanical switches such as toggle, rocker, slide, and push‑button types. These can be momentary or latching and may be single‑pole or multi‑pole. Electromechanical switches, like relays, use a coil to move contacts for higher current or isolation. Solid‑state switches rely on semiconductor devices (for example MOSFETs or thyristors) to switch without moving parts, offering fast operation and compact form factors.

Key specifications include voltage and current rating, number of poles and throws, contact material and resistance, actuation force and travel, and operating life (cycles). Debounce behavior is relevant for momentary switches. Practical considerations include wear, contact arcing at high currents, thermal effects, and EMI/EMC performance. Standards commonly address isolation, ratings, and safety requirements.

Hardwareswitches appear in power supplies, consumer electronics, automotive and industrial controls, and input devices such as keyboards. They provide deterministic state changes and resilience to software faults, but they wear out over time and are not always suitable for remote control unless paired with actuators or control interlocks.

Standards and safety concerns cover electrical isolation, creepage and clearance distances, and compliance marks (UL, CE, IEC). Enclosures and optional IP ratings protect switches in harsh environments. Examples include light switches, power switches on devices, DIP switches, and keyboard key switches.
