Hand sewing is the craft of joining fabric or other materials by stitching with a needle and thread without the use of a sewing machine. It encompasses construction, mending, and decorative work performed by hand. Hand sewing is used in tailoring, dressmaking, upholstery, and many crafts, especially when precision, control, or delicate materials are required.

Common tools include blunt or sharp needles sized to fabric weight (sharps, betweens for tailoring; embroidery needles for decorative work), thread in cotton, polyester, silk, or linen, and waxed or multi-ply varieties for strength. Other essentials are scissors or small shears, straight pins and a pin cushion, a thimble for protection, measuring tools, and marking equipment such as chalk or fabric pens.

Frequently used stitches include the running stitch for basting and light seams, the backstitch for durable seams, the whipstitch for closing seams or seams on leather, and the slip stitch for invisible hems. Additional techniques such as the blind stitch, cross-stitch, satin stitch, and appliqué may serve decorative purposes or specific fabrics. Proper tension and even spacing are key.

Hand sewing is applied to hemming trousers and garments, darning socks, repairing tears, and performing delicate alterations. It is also essential in quilting, embroidery, leather work, and crafts where machine stitching is impractical or undesirable. Practice emphasizes control, timing, and patience rather than speed.

Historically, hand sewing predates sewing machines and remained the primary method of construction. Machines expanded production, but hand sewing remains valued for fine finishing, heirloom techniques, and repairs that require precision or access to cumbersome areas.
