Construction utilizes techniques such as darts, princess seams, gathers, pleats, tucks, and various seam allowances. Closures like zippers, buttons, hooks, or lacing and finishing touches such as hems, linings, and pressing are essential to the final look and function. Fabric choice depends on drape, stretch, fiber content, and care requirements.

Tools and equipment played a central role in dressmaking. Essential items include a sewing machine and often a serger, sharp scissors, pins, needles, thread, chalk or markers, measuring tools, and a pattern or pattern paper. A dress form, rulers, and pressing equipment aid in fitting and finishing.

The field ranges from home sewing to professional dressmaking and can include bespoke, made-to-measure, couture, and ready-to-wear production. In practice, dressmaking combines artistic design with technical sewing skills, supported by patterns, fittings, and careful finishing.
