galgo

Galgo is the Spanish term for a greyhound, a member of the sighthound family known for speed and a lean, athletic build. In Iberia, galgo also designates a group of regional greyhounds used for hunting hares and rabbits, including the Galgo Español (Spanish Greyhound) and other local varieties. These dogs share the long legs, deep chest, and short coat typical of greyhounds.

Physical characteristics: Galgos are tall, slender dogs with a narrow head and long neck. They have short, smooth coats that may be fawn, brindle, black, or white with patches. They typically stand around 60–70 cm at the shoulder and are built for sprinting, able to reach high speeds over short distances. Their bodies reflect endurance and agility suited to hunting.

Temperament and care: They are usually calm indoors, affectionate with family, and often reserved with strangers. They have a strong prey drive and may not be reliable with small animals. Daily exercise is essential; they enjoy long runs or walks, but adapt well to apartment life if given regular activity. They prefer mild climates and soft bedding; training tends to be positive and gentle.

Health and lifespan: Galgos are generally healthy, with a life expectancy around 10–14 years. As with many sighthounds, they can be prone to orthopedic issues in older age, dental problems, and certain heart conditions; regular veterinary care and a weight-appropriate diet help.

Welfare and population: In some regions of Spain and Portugal, galgos have faced welfare concerns due to hunting practices and abandonment after hunting seasons. Rescue groups work to rehome retired hunters and racing dogs, and international adoption programs have helped place many galgos in new homes.
