Greyhound is a breed of sighthound known for its speed and slender, aerodynamic build. They have a lean frame, long legs, and a deep chest. Adults typically stand 68–76 cm tall at the shoulder (27–30 inches), with males usually slightly larger than females, and they weigh about 25–32 kg (55–70 lb).

Historically, greyhounds arose from ancient sighthounds used for hunting game across Europe and the Middle East. Modern racing greyhounds were developed in the 19th and early 20th centuries in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The breed is recognized by major kennel clubs, and racing remains active in many countries while retired racing dogs are commonly adopted as pets.

Greyhounds are usually gentle, affectionate, and good with families. They are relatively low-energy indoors but require regular exercise and are known for their brief bursts of high speed. They typically get along with other dogs but may have a strong chase instinct toward smaller animals, so supervision around cats and small pets is advised.

Their short coat requires minimal grooming. They are sensitive to cold due to low body fat, so a warm coat can help in cool climates. Common health considerations include orthopedic injuries, dental issues, and certain eye conditions; they are generally healthy but can have anesthesia sensitivity. Lifespan is typically around 10–14 years.

Retired racing greyhounds are commonly rehomed as pets; they often adapt well to home life and apartment living if provided regular exercise and a supportive environment.
