Sighthound is a term used for dog breeds whose hunting style relies primarily on sight and speed rather than scent. Also known as gazehounds, these dogs pursue game through rapid bursts of acceleration and sustained running. They typically have lean, athletic builds, long legs, deep chests, and keen eyesight, all adapted for fast pursuit. Their strong prey drive means they can be inclined to chase small animals, so proper socialization and fencing are important.

Common examples include the greyhound, saluki (Arabian), borzoi (Russian Wolfhound), Afghan hound, whippet, Italian greyhound, Scottish deerhound, and Irish wolfhound. Sighthounds vary in size and coat type but share the reliance on sight over scent in hunting. They have been used for racing, coursing, and endurance hunting in many regions, and the term can extend to mixed breeds that retain the sighthound hunting style.

Temperament and care: Sighthounds are often intelligent, independent, and reserved with strangers. They typically form strong bonds with their families and can be gentle with children when properly socialized. They require regular exercise but are usually comfortable with long periods of rest indoors. Training benefits from patience and positive reinforcement. They can be sensitive to extreme temperatures due to relatively thin coats and low body fat.

Health and lifespan: Many sighthounds average about 10 to 14 years of life. Common concerns include bloat in deep-chested breeds, orthopedic issues in larger individuals, and eye or heart conditions.
