Cottonmouth, also known as water moccasin, is a venomous snake species native to the southeastern United States. It belongs to the pit viper subfamily and is scientifically known as Agkistrodon piscivorus. The name "cottonmouth" refers to the white coloration inside the snake's mouth, which it displays when threatened.

Cottonmouths are semi-aquatic and are often found in or near water bodies such as swamps, marshes, and slow-moving streams. They have a robust body with a distinctive triangular head and elliptical pupils. Their coloration varies but often includes shades of brown, olive, or black, with dark bands or crossbands. Adults typically range from 2 to 4 feet in length.

These snakes are known for their aggressive behavior when provoked. They often stand their ground when threatened, flattening their bodies and displaying their cotton-white mouths as a warning. Cottonmouths are venomous, possessing a hemotoxic venom that can cause severe pain, swelling, and tissue damage in humans. However, fatalities are rare due to the availability of antivenom and medical care.

Cottonmouths primarily feed on fish, amphibians, and small mammals. They are ovoviviparous, meaning they give birth to live young rather than laying eggs. Females typically produce litters of 1 to 20 offspring.

Despite their fearsome reputation, cottonmouths play a crucial role in their ecosystem by controlling populations of prey species. However, their venomous nature and aggressive behavior make them a species to be respected and avoided in the wild. Conservation efforts are generally not a priority for cottonmouths, as they are relatively abundant and not currently threatened.
