Agkistrodon

Agkistrodon is a genus of venomous pit vipers found in North and Central America. The genus is a member of the family Viperidae and consists of several species, including the copperhead, cottonmouth, and copperhead canker. Agkistrodon species are characterized by their heat-sensing pits located between their eyes and nostrils, as well as their distinctive markings and patterns.

The venom of Agkistrodon species contains hemotoxins and cytotoxins, which can cause pain, swelling, and necrosis at the wound site. In severe cases, Agkistrodon venom can affect the central nervous system, leading to symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, and respiratory failure. Most Agkistrodon species are relatively non-aggressive and will only bite humans in self-defense.

Agkistrodon species inhabit a variety of habitats, including forests, grasslands, and wetlands. They are generally found in areas with plentiful food sources, such as rodents and small mammals. Agkistrodon species are ovoviviparous, meaning they give birth to live young that have developed from eggs. The gestation period for Agkistrodon species is typically around 6-8 months, and females give birth to 2-20 young per litter.
