The bulldog, often referred to as the English bulldog, is a medium-sized dog breed known for its muscular build, broad head, short muzzle, and distinctive facial wrinkles. The breed originated in England and was historically associated with bull-baiting before evolving into a companion and show dog in the 19th century. Today, bulldogs are valued for their calm disposition and loyal companionship.

Physically, bulldogs have a sturdy, heavy-set frame with a broad chest and a short, low-slung silhouette. They typically stand around 12 to 16 inches tall at the withers and weigh about 40 to 50 pounds. The coat is short and smooth in colors including brindle, fawn, white, and piebald patterns. Their face features a short muzzle, pronounced underbite, and deep wrinkles, which require regular cleaning and care.

Temperament is generally amiable and even-tempered. Bulldogs tend to be gentle, good with children, and relatively sociable with strangers. They can be stubborn and are often best suited to patient, positive reinforcement training. They usually prefer low to moderate exercise and enjoy short, daily walks and time indoors. Their tolerance for heat is limited, and they should be kept in cooler environments during hot weather.

Health and care considerations include a predisposition to brachycephalic airway syndrome, dental issues, skin infections in folds, and joint problems such as hip and elbow dysplasia. Regular veterinary checkups, a balanced diet to prevent obesity, careful grooming of facial folds, dental care, and modest exercise contribute to their well-being. The typical lifespan is around 8 to 10 years.
