The most well-known species within this genus is *Blaberus cranifer*, commonly known as the Cuban cockroach or giant Cuban cockroach. This species is native to Cuba, the Bahamas, and the Cayman Islands, where it inhabits a variety of environments, including forests, grasslands, and human settlements. Adults typically reach lengths of 1.5 to 2 inches (3.8 to 5 cm), making them among the larger cockroach species. They are primarily nocturnal and omnivorous, feeding on decaying plant material, fruits, and occasionally insects.

Other notable species include *Blaberus discoidalis*, the brown-headed burrowing cockroach, which is native to Central and South America. This species is known for its burrowing behavior and is often found in sandy or loose soil habitats. Like other blaberus species, it is relatively large, with adults reaching up to 2 inches (5 cm) in length.

Blaberus cockroaches play ecological roles in their natural habitats, contributing to nutrient cycling through the decomposition of organic matter. In the pet trade, they are valued for their ease of care and role in maintaining terrariums by consuming waste and controlling fungal growth. They are often bred in captivity for educational purposes and as part of biological pest control programs.

These cockroaches are generally not considered pests in human environments, though they may occasionally enter homes in search of food. Their presence is more commonly associated with natural or semi-natural settings rather than urban areas.
