Techniques in beadings include stringing to create jewelry such as necklaces and bracelets; bead embroidery which attaches beads to a foundation fabric; bead weaving which interlocks beads in patterns; loom weaving for larger, structured pieces; and netting or off-loom stitches that produce flexible fabrics. Tools commonly used are beading needles, fine thread, bead mats, bead boards, and pliers.

Applications of beadings are diverse: jewelry and personal accessories, embellished clothing and bags, home decor such as cushions or wall hangings, and ceremonial or traditional beadwork in various cultures. Beadings often carry cultural or symbolic significance and can indicate identity, status, or affiliation.
