Windwurf
Windwurf, or windthrow, is the uprooting or breakage of trees caused by strong winds during storms. It commonly occurs in mature forests with shallow root systems, waterlogged or heavy soils, and in densely stocked or uniformly aged stands such as commercial plantations. The term is used in forestry and ecology to describe damage patterns that create large gaps in the canopy and alter stand structure.
Causes and mechanisms include damage that occurs when wind loads exceed the mechanical stability of trees
Ecological and landscape effects are sizable. Windthrow creates open gaps, accelerating secondary succession, increasing light and
Management and mitigation strategies focus on reducing vulnerability through diversification of species and age classes, thinning
