Thinning is the practice of selectively removing individuals from a densely populated stand or cluster to improve growth, health, and value of the remaining population.

In forestry, thinning is a silvicultural treatment applied to young or mid-rotation stands. It reduces density to elevate light availability, accelerate diameter growth of residual trees, improve wood quality, and reduce risks from pests and windthrow. Methods include thinning from below (removing the smallest or poorly formed trees), thinning from above (removing dominant trees to adjust size structure), and crown thinning (targeting trees to improve canopy light distribution). Sanitation thinning removes damaged or diseased trees. Timing ranges from pre-commercial thinning to commercial thinning, and intensity is often expressed as a percentage of basal area or trees removed. The goals include healthier stands, better timber quality, and more resilient forest structure.

In fruit production and horticulture, thinning reduces crop load by removing blossoms, fruits, or seeds. Techniques include manual thinning and chemical thinning using growth regulators. Benefits include larger fruit size, improved coloration and flavor, better uniform ripening, and reduced biennial bearing; drawbacks include labor costs and potential yield loss if thinning is too aggressive.

In statistics and computer science, thinning describes the process of randomly removing elements from a data set or a point process to reduce density, often used in simulations or sampling schemes.
