A watchdog timer requires periodic resets (kicks) by the system; if these resets fail, the timer triggers a recovery action, commonly a system reset or restart of a software component. Hardware watchdogs are prevalent in embedded systems, while software watchdogs monitor processes and services, including operating systems, containers, and virtual machines.

In governance and media, watchdogs describe organizations, groups, or journalists that monitor institutions such as governments, regulators, or corporations to detect misconduct, ensure transparency, and advocate accountability.
