Valutakurspolitikk refers to the set of measures and strategies adopted by a government or central bank to influence its currency's value relative to other currencies. The goal is often to achieve macroeconomic objectives such as controlling inflation, stabilizing the balance of payments, encouraging exports, or maintaining competitiveness.

Historically, many countries used fixed or pegged regimes, fixing their currency to a stable anchor such as the U.S. dollar or gold. In the 1970s, the collapse of the Bretton Woods system led to a shift toward floating exchange rates, where currency values are determined by market forces. Since then, many economies have adopted flexible but managed regimes, allowing the market to set rates while intervening occasionally to prevent extreme volatility.

Policy tools include direct intervention in foreign‑exchange markets by buying or selling foreign currency, adjusting interest rates to attract or repel capital flows, and employing capital controls or reserve requirements. Some countries use absolute pegs or currency boards, whereby the domestic currency is fully backed by a foreign reserve. Others adopt bands or tranches, permitting the currency to move within a pre‑determined range.

Examples of modern practice include Sweden’s flexible regime with a strong monetary policy framework, Japan’s accommodative stance to counterdeflation, and China’s managed float, which blends a rule‑based system with discretionary interventions. Emerging markets often face trade‑off tensions: a tightly controlled rate can maintain domestic price stability but may constrain fiscal flexibility, while a floating rate can absorb external shocks but may exacerbate domestic inflation.

Critics argue that active intervention can distort market signals and lead to unintended fiscal burdens. Proponents claim it provides a tool to dampen external shocks, especially in fragile economies.
