Japan is an island nation in East Asia located in the western Pacific Ocean. It comprises four main islands—Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku—and numerous smaller ones. It lies to the east of the Korean Peninsula and China and features a rugged coastline, mountains, and extensive forested areas. The country experiences frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity, and its climate spans from humid continental in the north to subtropical in the south.

Historically, Japan developed from prehistoric Jomon and Yayoi cultures to feudal periods ruled by powerful clans and then the Tokugawa shogunate. The Meiji Restoration of 1868 initiated rapid modernization and centralized government. After World War II, Japan adopted a new constitution in 1947, establishing a parliamentary system and a constitutional framework for the modern state.

Japan is a unitary constitutional monarchy with a bicameral National Diet. The Emperor serves a largely ceremonial role, while political power rests with elected representatives. The Prime Minister heads the government, and local prefectures manage regional administration.

Japan has one of the world's largest and most technologically advanced economies, driven by manufacturing, electronics, automotive, and robotics. It is a highly urbanized society with high life expectancy and a rapidly aging population. Major cities include Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. Cultural traditions encompass Shinto and Buddhist practices, tea ceremony, arts and crafts, and a global impact on manga, cinema, and cuisine.

Japan faces energy and environmental challenges, including disaster risk reduction and climate policy. It is a member of international bodies such as the United Nations, G7, and OECD, and maintains close security and economic ties, especially with the United States. The country participates in global trade, science, and cultural exchange.
