Tokyo

Tokyo, officially Tokyo Metropolis, is the capital city of Japan and one of the world's most populous urban areas. It serves as the political center and a major global hub for economy, culture, and transportation.

Geographically, Tokyo sits on the eastern coast of Honshu along Tokyo Bay in the Kanto region. The metropolis comprises 23 special wards in central Tokyo, plus cities, towns, and villages in the Tama area, and outlying islands such as the Izu and Ogasawara chains.

Historically, Edo was the seat of the Tokugawa shogunate. When the imperial capital was moved to Tokyo in 1869, the city adopted its current name. It endured the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake and extensive Allied bombing during World War II, followed by rapid postwar development.

Governance and economy: Tokyo Metropolis is governed by a governor and an elected assembly. The 23 wards are administered by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, while western areas have separate municipalities. Economically, Tokyo is a global financial center, home to the Tokyo Stock Exchange and many multinational firms; services dominate the economy.

Transport and culture: The city is served by two major international airports, Haneda and Narita, and an extensive rail network including JR East, Tokyo Metro, and Toei. Notable districts such as Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ginza, and Akihabara offer shopping and nightlife; landmarks include the Imperial Palace, Tokyo Skytree, and Tokyo Tower. Museums, cuisine, and pop culture define its character.

Education and population: Tokyo hosts numerous universities, including the University of Tokyo. The 23 wards are densely populated, and the wider metropolitan area ranks among the world's most populous.
