Tiedonsiirtoväylän

Tiedonsiirtoväylä, in English data transfer bus, is a communication subsystem within a computer or digital device that carries data between components such as the central processing unit, memory, and input/output controllers. The genitive form Tiedonsiirtoväylän is used in Finnish to describe properties or relations of the bus, for example Tiedonsiirtoväylän kapasiteetti or Tiedonsiirtoväylän arbirointi.

Buses can be organized as parallel or serial and may be synchronous or asynchronous. The width of a data bus, measured in bits, determines how much information can be transmitted per cycle, while clocking and signaling define timing. Parallel buses transmit multiple bits simultaneously, but can face signaling and coordination challenges at high speeds; serial buses send bits one after another and often rely on higher speeds and advanced encoding. Buses may be shared among devices (multi-master or multi-slave configurations) or be point-to-point. Arbitration mechanisms coordinate access when multiple devices attempt to use the bus concurrently.

In a typical computer architecture, the data bus forms part of the system bus, together with the address bus and control bus. The data bus carries actual information, the address bus specifies the source or destination, and the control bus conveys timing and control signals. Over time, many traditional parallel buses have given way to high-speed serial interconnects (for example PCIe), while embedded and microcontroller environments still rely on simpler buses such as I2C and SPI. Modern systems may also use on-chip networks and memory buses that connect processors, memory, and peripherals efficiently.
