Historically, textile design developed from hand-drawn motifs and block printing to woven patterns such as jacquard. The advent of screen and digital printing, and computer-aided design (CAD), expanded capabilities, enabling complex repeats, precise color control, and rapid prototyping.

The typical process includes research and concept development, motif creation, developing repeat patterns, digitizing artwork, color management, and selecting a production method (screen printing, digital printing, weaving, embroidery). Designers produce technical sheets with colorways, repeat geometry, and material requirements for manufacturers. Production involves testing for colorfastness, hand, and durability, followed by finishing steps like washing, calendaring, or coating.

Techniques include printed textiles (screen and digital printing), woven patterns (jacquard, dobby), and embroidery. Repeats are a key concept, enabling seamless tiling across fabric widths. Software tools such as vector graphics programs and specialized textile CAD systems are commonly used.

Sustainability is increasingly important, with designers prioritizing low-impact dyes, recycled or organic fibers, and transparent supply chains.
