STRmarkörer, also known as short tandem repeat (STR) markers, are a type of genetic marker used in DNA analysis to identify individual characteristics and attributes. These markers are repetitive sequences of DNA, typically two to five base pairs long, that are repeated a specific number of times, usually in a head-to-tail orientation.

STR markers are widely used in forensic science, paternity testing, and genetic genealogy to mitigate the limitations of classical genetic markers. They offer several advantages, including higher accuracy, specificity, and discrimination power due to their high degree of variability within the human population.

The number of repetitions of a STR marker, known as the repeat number, determines the individualization and specificity of the marker. As the repeat number increases, the likelihood of finding identical repeats in different individuals also increases, making the marker more unsuitable for identification purposes. However, markers with low repeat numbers provide higher individual specificity and are more valuable for distinguishing between individuals.
