Returntorunning is a structured approach to reintroducing running after a hiatus caused by injury, illness, or reduced training. The term emphasizes a careful, staged progression rather than a rapid return, with the aim of restoring running capacity while minimizing the risk of re-injury.

Its practice involves assessment by clinical or coaching professionals, baseline functional tests, and ongoing symptom monitoring. A typical program uses gradual loading, run-walk intervals, and alternating hard and easy days to manage fatigue. Progression is guided by pain, function, and individual tolerance rather than a fixed timetable.

A common progression starts with short run-walk sessions, often 2–3 times per week, totaling 10–20 minutes of running in a session. Each week, running time is increased by small increments (for example 5–10%) while walking phases are shortened. The aim is to reach continuous running without significant symptoms before increasing distance.

Targets include lower leg and pelvic mechanics, footwear and surface considerations, warm-up and cooldown routines, and adequate recovery. The approach is applied to various overuse injuries such as plantar fasciopathy, tendinopathies, knee pain, and stress injuries, and is often integrated with cross-training like cycling or swimming.

Evidence from sports medicine supports gradual, individualized return-to-running programs for reducing re-injury risk, though robust, high-quality trials remain limited and outcomes vary by condition. Professionals emphasize tailoring plans to the athlete’s history, goals, and sport-specific demands.
