The core idea is that adaptations to training are most effective when the imposed demands mirror those of the sport.

Practically, sportspecific training involves drills and conditioning that reproduce typical game scenarios and position-specific tasks. For example, a soccer program may emphasize repeated sprints with ball work, multidirectional runs, and tactical positioning; a basketball routine might focus on jumping mechanics, lateral quickness, and endurance.
