Sportspecific is an adjective used to describe training, equipment, or assessments that are tailored to the unique demands of a particular sport. In coaching and sports science, sportspecific approaches prioritize movements, energy systems, technical skills, and in-game decision making that closely resemble real competition. The core idea is that adaptations to training are most effective when the imposed demands mirror those of the sport.

Practically, sportspecific training involves drills and conditioning that reproduce typical game scenarios and position-specific tasks. For example, a soccer program may emphasize repeated sprints with ball work, multidirectional runs, and tactical positioning; a basketball routine might focus on jumping mechanics, lateral quickness, and endurance. Equipment and gear are also sometimes designed with sport-specific needs in mind, such as protective equipment, footwear, or sport-specific testing protocols that reflect on-field performance.

The approach is linked to the Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demands (SAID) principle, which holds that the body adapts in ways that mirror the stresses it encounters. Consequently, sport-specific assessments measure performance in ways that predict in-game success, rather than relying solely on general fitness tests.

While sportspecific programming offers performance relevance, it carries risks of over-specialization and reduced development of general athletic abilities. Effective plans balance sport-specific work with general conditioning, skill development, proper periodization, and adequate recovery to minimize injury risk.
