Realzeitbedarf refers to the requirement for a system or process to respond to external events or data inputs within a specific, often very short, time frame. This concept is crucial in fields where delays can have significant consequences, such as industrial automation, robotics, automotive systems, and telecommunications. Systems with realzeitbedarf, often called real-time systems, must guarantee that their operations are completed by a deadline.

There are generally two categories of real-time systems: hard real-time and soft real-time. In hard real-time systems, missing a deadline is considered a catastrophic failure, leading to incorrect operation or system collapse. Examples include flight control systems or anti-lock braking systems where a delayed response is unacceptable. Examples include video streaming or online gaming, where occasional lag can be tolerated to some extent.
