Pelargonioista

Pelargonioista, often commonly called geraniums, are a group of flowering plants in the family Geraniaceae. Despite their common name, they are distinct from the true geraniums, which belong to the genus Geranium. The genus Pelargonium is native to southern Africa and includes a wide variety of species and hybrids, many of which are popular ornamental plants grown worldwide.

Pelargoniums are typically herbaceous perennial plants, though some can be subshrubs. They are characterized by their often aromatic leaves, which can vary in shape and size, and their showy flowers. The flowers are usually borne in umbels and come in a wide range of colors, including red, pink, white, orange, and purple. Many varieties have distinctive markings or patterns on their petals.

The most widely cultivated pelargoniums are hybrids, particularly those in the Zonal pelargonium group, known for their distinct concentric rings or zones on their leaves. Ivy-leafed pelargoniums (Pelargonium peltatum) are characterized by their trailing or spreading habit and lobed leaves, making them ideal for hanging baskets and containers. Regal pelargoniums, also known as Martha Washington geraniums, are prized for their large, ruffled flowers. Scented pelargoniums are grown primarily for their fragrant foliage, which can emit scents reminiscent of rose, lemon, mint, or apple.

Pelargoniums are cultivated as houseplants and garden plants. They generally prefer sunny locations and well-drained soil. While relatively easy to grow, they can be susceptible to certain pests and diseases if not provided with adequate care. Propagation is commonly done through stem cuttings. Their vibrant blooms and diverse forms make them a staple in flower gardens, window boxes, and patio containers.
