Navigator

A navigator is a person who determines a vehicle’s course and directs its movement, or a device, technique, or system that assists in determining position and planning routes. Traditionally, navigators guided ships or aircraft, ensuring safe and efficient travel over water or through airspace. In a broader sense, any method or tool that helps determine location and direction can be described as navigational.

Historically, navigators relied on charts, compasses, and instruments such as the sextant, chronometer, and log to estimate position and course. Celestial navigation used celestial bodies as reference points, while dead reckoning estimated position from speed, direction, and time. Radio navigation systems—like LORAN and later satellite-based methods—improved accuracy and reliability, especially in poor visibility. Modern navigation integrates satellites, electronic maps, sensors, and automation.

Today, navigational practice spans maritime, aviation, space, and land travel. Global Positioning System (GPS) and other global or regional satellite navigation systems provide precise positioning. Inertial navigation, radar, sonar, and advanced routing software support position tracking, route optimization, collision avoidance, and mission planning. Consumer technologies include car and smartphone navigation apps, enabling real-time directions and traffic updates.

In computing, the term appears in different contexts. Netscape Navigator was a widely used web browser in the 1990s. In modern web development, the navigator object or prefix refers to browser-related information and capabilities, reflecting how users access and move through content.

Etymologically, navigator derives from Latin navigare, meaning to sail, underscoring its long association with guiding movement across distances.
