A chronometer is a timekeeping instrument that has been certified to meet precise standards of accuracy. The term originated in the 18th century for sea clocks that could keep accurate time on long voyages, a critical capability for determining longitude by comparing local time with a reference time at Greenwich.

Historically, marine chronometers were developed to withstand the motion of ships and changes in temperature and humidity. Pioneered in Britain in the 18th century, these instruments combined a highly stable oscillator, effective temperature compensation, and a rugged construction. Their reliability transformed navigation, allowing sailors to determine longitude with much greater confidence.

In modern horology, the designation chronometer is a certification rather than a movement type. Independent bodies test watch movements to ensure they meet strict performance criteria. The most widely known is the Swiss COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres), which subjects movements to roughly 15 days of testing in several positions and temperatures, requiring an average daily rate within about -4 to +6 seconds per day. Some brands also pursue METAS certification, which includes additional criteria such as magnetic resistance and real-case performance.

Today, chronometer labeling is commonly found on high-precision mechanical watches and, less often, on quartz models. The label indicates a higher level of accuracy and quality control, but does not guarantee perfection under all conditions. While modern quartz timepieces can exceed chronometer standards, the term remains a historic and prestige designation tied to independent testing.
