Timepieces are devices that measure and display time. They range from portable wristwatches and pocket watches to fixed clocks and scientific instruments. Timepieces rely on various display methods, including analog dials and digital readouts, and serve purposes from daily scheduling to precise navigation and scientific timing.

Historically, timekeeping began with sundials and water clocks in ancient civilizations. Mechanical clocks appeared in Europe in the Middle Ages, improving accuracy and reliability. The invention of the pendulum clock by Christiaan Huygens in the 17th century further increased precision. For navigation, marine chronometers were developed in the 18th century to determine longitude at sea.

Modern timepieces employ different mechanisms. Mechanical timepieces use a mainspring, gear train, and an escapement, typically with a balance wheel. Quartz watches rely on a crystal oscillator for high accuracy, while atomic clocks use cesium or rubidium standards as primary references. Some watches combine multiple technologies.

Common features include chronometer certification for high precision, calendar displays, and various complications such as moon phase or chronographs. Water resistance, durability, and finish are also important considerations, especially for sports or professional use.

Today, timepieces coexist with increasingly pervasive electronic devices. While smartphones and other devices provide timekeeping, traditional watches are valued for craftsmanship, aesthetic design, and mechanical interest, and remain active in professions requiring reliable or legible timekeeping.
