Greenwich

Greenwich is a district in southeast London, England, located on the south bank of the River Thames. It is part of the London Borough of Greenwich and, historically, was in the county of Kent until the 1965 reorganization. The area is a long-standing center of royal residence, maritime activity, and scientific inquiry.

Historically, Greenwich grew as a royal and naval hub from the medieval period. The Palace of Placentia, a royal residence at Greenwich, played a significant role in English monarchy, later evolving into part of the naval and educational complex that characterizes the area today. In the 17th and 18th centuries Greenwich became a leading center for navigation, shipbuilding, and scientific study. The Royal Observatory, established in 1675, made Greenwich the home of the Prime Meridian, and Greenwich Mean Time served as a global time standard from the 19th century onward.

Prominent landmarks in Greenwich include the Old Royal Naval College, the Queen’s House, the National Maritime Museum, and the Cutty Sark clipper ship. Greenwich Park, one of London’s oldest royal parks, offers notable views of the river and city. The area is designated as the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its historic ensemble of palaces, churches, and maritime institutions.

Today, Greenwich is a popular tourist destination and a functioning residential and educational quarter. It is home to the University of Greenwich, which maintains campuses in the historic college buildings. The district is well connected by National Rail, the Docklands Light Railway, and river ferry services along the Thames.
