Mudis

Mudis are individuals of the Mudi, a Hungarian herding dog native to the Carpathian Basin. The breed arose in Hungary's plains during the 18th and 19th centuries as a versatile shepherd's assistant. Mudis helped control sheep and cattle and also served as an alert guard against predators. The name is often used in the plural to refer to the breed as a group.

Mudis are medium-sized, agile dogs with a compact, muscular build. They have a short, double coat that provides weather resistance. Coat colors typically include black, blue (a diluted gray), fawn, or brindle, often with white markings. They have a wedge-shaped head, alert eyes, and a tail carried high.

Intelligent, energetic, and independent. They are quick learners and excel in obedience, agility, and herding trials. They form strong bonds with their families and may be reserved with strangers; they require early socialization and consistent training.

Health tends to be good, but as with many active herding breeds, they can be prone to hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy. Lifespan is around 12–14 years. Exercise needs are high; daily workouts plus mental stimulation; coat requires periodic brushing and regular grooming.

Today, Mudis are kept as working dogs and companions. They are most common in Hungary and parts of Europe, but have drawn interest in other regions through breed clubs, shows, and sport.
