Coat

A coat is a garment worn on the upper body, typically extending past the hips and sometimes to the knee or longer. Shorter coats and jackets range from sport coats to chic evening coats.

Other uses and care: The term coat also describes a natural fur or hair covering on animals and a thin protective layer applied to surfaces, such as a coat of paint. Care varies by material: wool and cashmere generally require dry cleaning or gentle hand wash, while cotton and synthetics can be machine washed; air-dry and store in a cool, dry place.
