Marginstogrid

Marginstogrid is a term used in design and typography to describe a workflow or principle that uses page margins to establish a grid framework for content layout. The idea is that the outer margins define the boundaries within which a consistent grid can be laid out, guiding the placement of text, images, and other elements to achieve alignment and rhythm across a document or interface.

In practice, marginstogrid begins with setting outer (and sometimes inner) margins. The remaining content area width is then divided into a chosen number of columns with defined gutters. The column width, height, and any baseline or row grid are derived from these margins, so that elements snap to the grid for even spacing and predictable alignment. This approach can be applied to print layouts such as magazines and books, as well as to digital interfaces and responsive designs, where grid rules adapt to changing viewport sizes while preserving margins as a guiding boundary.

It supports scalable and modular design, since changing the page size or margins can proportionally adjust the entire grid.
