Käytösterapiamuodot encompass a range of therapeutic approaches rooted in the principles of learning theory and behaviorism. These therapies aim to understand and modify observable behaviors by identifying the environmental factors that influence them. The core idea is that problematic behaviors are learned and can therefore be unlearned or replaced with more adaptive ones.

Key to these therapies is the analysis of the antecedent, behavior, and consequence (ABC model). Antecedents are events or situations that precede a behavior, while consequences are the outcomes that follow it. By understanding these relationships, therapists can develop interventions to change the behavior. Common techniques include reinforcement, where desirable behaviors are rewarded to increase their frequency, and punishment, where undesirable behaviors are met with aversive consequences. Extinction is another method, involving the removal of reinforcement to decrease the occurrence of a behavior.

Different applications of these principles exist. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a widely recognized approach, particularly in working with individuals with autism spectrum disorder. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), while incorporating cognitive elements, also heavily relies on behavioral techniques to address issues like anxiety, depression, and phobias. Other forms might focus on specific skills training, such as social skills or assertiveness. The emphasis remains on data-driven assessment and intervention, with progress being systematically monitored.
